The 0-1 Oglethorpe County Patriots traveled to Hall County, on Friday, to take on the 1-0 East Hall Vikings.
The Patriots offense was forced to make big changes prior to the game as, during the season opener against Social Circle, Hunter Hall, the starting quarterback for OCHS, sustained an injury that would result in him being unable to play for the remainder of the game.
Due to this, the Patriot coaches put in Darius Heard at quarterback to close the game. Heard would have to start as quarterback for the East Hall game, which would be his first full game of the season as starting quarterback.
The Patriots received first and got things started when Jordan Johnson broke away from the defenders and took it to the house. This touchdown put Oglethorpe up 7-0 early.
Oglethorpe would then go on to force East Hall to punt, but would give it right back to the Vikings after they were unable to convert on fourth down and six.
East Hall would go on to score a touchdown, and would score again to end the first quarter.
The second quarter was mostly uneventful but East Hall was able to score a touchdown, which put them up 21-7 heading into halftime.
As the third quarter opened, East Hall was able to score quickly, but missed the extra point. This touchdown would extend their lead 27-7 with 11:16 left in the quarter.
East Hall would soon go on to score another touchdown after a long pass to a receiver on fourth and six. This would be the last score of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, East Hall would go on to score one more time, which would end the game with a score of 40-7.
Being the first road game of the season, and having critical injuries would contribute to Oglethorpe’s loss. Going into the game, many assumed this would most likely be an easy win, given the Vikings record last season, however it was not pretty for the Patriots.
The loss Friday sent the Pats home with an 0-2 record, and a lot of work to do.
Oglethorpe is set to play at home next week against Washington-Wilkes high school.
