The 0-2 Washington-Wilkes Tigers visited the 0-2 Oglethorpe County Patriots on Friday to restore a nearly 50 year old rivalry. The two teams met at Patriot Stadium in Lexington, GA and got things started around 7:30pm.
To start the game Oglethorpe recovered a fumble, which they took down the field and put three on the board with a short field goal.
Following this, both teams were forced to punt, and on Oglethorpe was able to recover another fumble to set them up with a first and 10 to end the quarter.
In the second quarter, Darius Heard ran the ball in for an Oglethorpe touchdown, but the Patriots were unable to make the extra point. This put them up 9-0 against the Tigers.
Washington-Wilkes was quickly able to respond with a huge rushing touchdown which cut the lead down to only two points. The Tigers then recovered a fumble but came up short on a fourth down play which gave the Patriots the ball back as the quarter ended.
Following the halftime break, Washington-Wilkes was able to take the lead with a field goal on fourth down. The three points made the score 10-9.
The Tiger field goal would be the only points scored for the remainder of the quarter.
To get the fourth quarter going, Washington-Wilkes was able to recover a fumble, but had to punt on fourth down. Oglethorpe got the ball back with 5:52 left, and Darius Heard was able to take it in for a one play touchdown drive. Oglethorpe was able to convert on the two-point try which gave them the lead 17-10.
Washington-Wilkes quickly responded with a one play touchdown run of their own which tied the game up at 17-17.
The Tigers were able to recover their own onside kick which gave them great field position and led to them kicking a game-winning field goal with four seconds left. Washington-Wilkes was able to extend their 29 year winning streak, and get their first win of the season.
On the other hand, Oglethorpe’s struggles continue into week four, as they now have an 0-3 record. There were multiple questionable plays, and the Patriots rarely passed the ball which contributed to their loss. Despite a tight game, Oglethorpe had multiple turnovers that gave Washington-Wilkes the upper hand.
The Patriots are set to travel to Augusta to take on the 2-1 Laney Wildcats.
I would again like to take the time to thank everyone for their dedication to the blog. I will include in this message that I will be out of town Friday, and will not be able to watch the Patriots play in-person. I will be keeping up with stats and plays and will get an article out about the game, but it may not be as detailed. Thank you so much for your understanding and support.
